The decision about university admission on Saturday

The decision on how to take the admission tests in public universities of Bangladesh in the 2020-21 academic year will be decided on Saturday. The VCs agreed that a policy decision on admission would be taken at a meeting of the Vice-Chancellor’s Council on Saturday. A virtual meeting of the vice-chancellors of public universities was held with the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday. The meeting was attended by the Vice-Chancellors of almost all the public universities of the country.

After the meeting, Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath University Professor Mizanur Rahman told reporters that everyone was asked for their opinion on how to take the admission test. Almost everyone objected to the admission test being conducted in the Corona situation.

He said that although it was not possible to conduct direct examinations, the decision was taken after discussing how to admit students to the university. A decision on the matter may be taken at a meeting of the Public University Council next Saturday.

Professor Rafiqullah Khan, Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra University in Sirajganj, has offered to take the admission test by evaluating the results of the test before filling the HSC examination form.

At the meeting, he said it would be risky to take the admission test in a cowardly situation. Even if students are not admitted again, a new crisis will be created. Since the results will be published through JSC and SSC exams by canceling the HSC exam, the question may arise when evaluating this result. He offered admission to the university after evaluating the results of the test while filling the form before the HSC examination. Some of the Vice-Chancellors agreed to his proposal.

The UGC urged the vice-chancellors not to question the admission test in any way. Also, considering the coronavirus infection situation, opening a university now would not be advisable at all.

According to public university vice-chancellors, opening the hall would be a suicidal decision. They cited examples of the spread of corona infection after the opening of many universities around the world.

University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Kazi Shahidullah said the entire nation is seeking a specific direction on the admission test at the university level. A final decision is needed on taking the university admission test.

UGC member Professor. Dil Afroza Begum, Professor. Md. Sajjad Hossain, Professor. Muhammad Alamgir, Professor. Biswajit Chand, Professor. Md. Vice-Chancellors of 47 public universities including Abu Taher were present.
